Greece Refugee Care Summer Mission

img_5052

In recent years, news broadcasts have been filled with stories of violence in the Middle East — especially Syria — and of the resulting refugee crisis. Syrian men, women, and children flee from their homes, jobs, and friends, hoping to escape war and poverty. More than 1 million refugees traveled through Turkey, piled into small, overcrowded rubber boats, and faced the dangerous journey across the Aegean Sea to the shores of Greece. They hoped to pass through the islands and continue into Europe.

However, most European countries have closed their borders leaving the refugees trapped in camps — unable to travel to a new destination and powerless to return home.

You can help meet physical needs and show the kindness of Jesus to struggling refugees by traveling with GAiN® to a camp in Greece.

You will serve refugees by distributing aid such as blankets or food or doing chores in the camp. Your presence and help will show refugees that they are loved and cared for.

Participants on this trip must be 18 years or older to serve in the camp and participants must be able to work on their feet eight hours at a time.

All volunteers will gather in the U.S. on May 15 for team briefing and depart for Greece together. Participants may choose to return to the U.S. on June 1, June 8, or June 15. Prices listed include international airfare and are estimates. Final trip costs will be determined by February 20.

All applications are due by February 15. $1,000 for airfare is due by March 1.

Engineering Summer Mission for Students

Because many communities in developing countries lack sanitary latrines, 1 billion people worldwide practice open defecation. This ultimately affects drinking water obtained from streams, ponds, and puddles. Understanding the effects of unsanitary water helps people protect themselves from germs that produce life-threatening illnesses.

You can help relieve the suffering of people of Malawi who live in these unsanitary conditions. By joining the GAiN® Engineering Summer Mission trip, over a period of two weeks you have the opportunity to plan, design, and execute the construction of a latrine and a retaining wall. You will see firsthand the practical and spiritual impact your engineering career path can have on a community.

In addition to engineering and construction work, you will explore ways to integrate ministry into your career and as you spend time with local Cru® staff members sharing the hope of Jesus with people in the heart of Malawi.

The GAiN engineering summer mission is open to college students majoring in engineering, construction management, sciences, or similar fields.

The first two weeks will consist of special training in Orlando, Florida. The remaining time will be spent in Malawi, executing engineering and construction projects such as latrines and retaining walls, as well as serving with local Cru staff members.

To apply, please complete and submit the summer missions application. All applicants will receive a response by January 31.

Women’s Health Summer Mission for Nursing Students

Women living in developing countries are 25 times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause. Approximately 800 women die daily due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Of these deaths, 440 occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Health education is essential to help prevent maternal deaths and ensure healthy children.

You can help teach lifesaving information to women in rural Africa by joining the GAiN® Women’s Health Summer Mission trip. In addition to health training, over the course of two weeks you will participate in the distribution of reusable feminine hygiene supplies that provide women in developing countries with freedom to go about their daily lives without fear of stigma or embarrassment.

When you participate in this trip, you will see firsthand the impact practical health knowledge and essential hygiene supplies can have on a community.

As part of the trip experience you also will learn how you can integrate ministry into your nursing future, whether in a clinical setting or in a mission hospital. You also will spend time with local Cru® staff members to share the hope of Jesus with people in the heart of Malawi.

The GAiN Women’s Health Summer Mission trip is open to female nursing students who have completed at least two semesters with clinical rotation of nursing school. Limited spots are available. We seek nine participants who demonstrate interest in maternal and child health, women’s rights, and women’s ministry.

Trip dates are June 1 – June 30. The first two weeks will consist of special training in Orlando, Florida. The remaining time will be spent in Malawi, hosting women’s health trainings and serving with local Cru staff members.

To apply, please complete and submit the summer missions application. Two references are required: one from a Cru staff member and one from a nursing professor. All applicants will receive a response by January 31.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate in a GAiN humanitarian trip?
Participants from 12 to 80 years old and of all skill levels have taken part in GAiN trips. Volunteers with a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and with sound health are welcome. However, not all trips will be suitable for children because of the type of work or the emotional toll it may take. Some trips may require more specialized skills, such as medical training. If special skills are required, this information will be mentioned in the trip description.

How many people participate in each trip?
Team size depends on the destination and the trip strategy. Teams can be as small as four people or as large as 40.

What is included in the cost of the trip?
The trip cost includes all in-country transportation, shared hotel or dorm accommodations, three meals daily (plus drinking water), interpreter services, in-country visa fees, emergency evacuation assistance, and all taxes, tips, and fees.

The trip cost does not include airfare, pre-trip visa fees (if required), passport costs, immunizations, medications, baggage charges (unless you are asked to carry a bag of GAiN aid), trip cancellation insurance, airport meals, or additional gifts or snacks you choose to bring.

Airfare is not included in the trip cost. Does this mean I am responsible for arranging my own travel to the destination country?
No. We will plan travel and provide an airline itinerary for you through our travel agents. Then we will send you the information to contact the agent and purchase your ticket. Through the travel agent, you will be able to arrange both your domestic and international travel. Arranging travel in this way lowers flight costs and allows you to book “through” travel straight from your home airport while still traveling with the team internationally.

How can I pay for the trip?
Trip participants and their supporters can pay by credit card through the participant’s giving page or by phone. Payments also can be made by check. All payments and donations are tax-deductible and non-refundable.

If I am unable to go on the trip, what happens to the money I have raised?
All contributions to Global Aid Network are income tax deductible and are made with the understanding that GAiN has complete discretion and control over the use of all donated funds. Should you not go on the trip, or should more funds than needed be raised, we will consult with with you to determine if the money will be held in your account for a future trip, be used for other expenses associated with this trip, or be given as a general donation to GAiN Humanitarian Trips.

Is the trip safe?
Your trip leader’s primary responsibility is the safety of the team. We are in touch with the U.S. State Department on all of our trips and are alert to changes in safety and security while overseas. While we do live in a complex world, GAiN trips do not include what we consider unnecessary risks, either in locations visited or activities implemented.

We work to make sure all of our trips are as safe as possible. All GAiN trip leaders are experienced in international ministry and trained in crisis management and CPR/first aid. At all times, a crisis manager is on call in the states, and contingency plans are in place before all trips. Emergency evacuation coverage and supplemental health coverage are included in the cost of your trip.

Where will the team meet? Will we meet before the trip?
In most cases the entire team will meet at the international departure airport in the U.S. and fly together to the destination country. Most trips will require no pre-trip preparation or meetings as a team. If a trip does require pre-trip preparation, the team leader will provide this information before accepting you for the trip. Some trip leaders may schedule a group Skype call before the trip for team introductions. Your trip leader will be in touch with you on an ongoing basis as you prepare for the trip.

Where will we stay?
Accommodations will vary depending on the country. Usually teams stay in a hotel or guest house chosen or recommended by our national hosts. Rooms generally will be shared by two people of the same gender or by spouses. If you prefer a room to yourself, a single supplement fee will be charged.

What if I have special dietary requirements?
In the areas where GAiN serves, it usually is not possible to make accommodations for special dietary needs.

Do you have additional trips not listed on the GAiN website?
All available trips are listed on the website. If you do not see a trip that works for you, you can contact trips@gainusa.org to receive updates in the future. New trips are added all the time.

If you have other questions about trips, contact trips@gainusa.org.
